Keep Your Back Strong with the C1

The C1, or pullover, isolates and strengthens the latissimus dorsi muscles, meaning the broad upper back muscles.

The C1 is a great addition to a training program as it works the latissimus dorsi via direct resistance through a full range of motion. Commonly referred to as the "lats", the latissimus dorsi has many functions, all of which involve movements of the arm. The main function of the lats is to pull the arms down towards the pelvis. This motion is used in a number of activities, such as swimming, tennis and climbing. Strengthening this muscle can also help to reduce back and shoulder pain.

Important Technique Points

  • Ensure that your back remains on the backrest at all times
  • Be sure to keep your neck relaxed and do not push with your head against the backrest
  • Remember to keep your hands relaxed throughout the exercise
  • Keep your shoulders back and focus on pulling your elbows towards your hips and past your torso

If you would like to add the C1 to your training program, be sure to talk to an instructor.
