Heart disease is one of Australia’s leading causes of death, affecting countless families and communities. According to ABS (2023), heart disease takes a life every 18 minutes, which is an average of 79 deaths per day. It causes nearly one in five (17.1%) of all deaths in Australia, with more men dying from it than women each year.
This February, Kieser is proud to support REDFEB, an annual initiative dedicated to raising awareness and funds for life-saving heart health research.
What is REDFEB?
REDFEB is an annual event that raises awareness and funds for heart disease research in Australia. People can take part by wearing red, donating, and learning more about the importance of heart health. The money raised goes towards research, education, and prevention to help reduce the number of lives lost to heart disease.
Strength Training for a Healthy Heart
Exercise plays a crucial role in heart health, and strength training is one of the best ways to support a strong cardiovascular system. Cardio exercise is often seen as the go-to for heart health, but strength training has powerful benefits that make it just as important for keeping your heart strong.
The American Heart Association posted an update on the benefits of resistance training for heart health for people with and without heart disease. They identified that strength training can help improve the key factors that contribute to heart disease and can reduce mortality rates by up to 17% (Paluch et al. 2024).
To support your heart health and reduce the risk of various diseases, DHAC (2021) recommends that Australians engage in at least two strength training sessions per week, along with regular physical activity. This well-rounded approach not only lowers the risk of heart disease but also improves overall long-term health. Unfortunately, many of us fail to hit these recommendations and REDFEB aims to change that.
