Why blood pressure matters more than many of us realise
Most of us don’t think much about our blood pressure until it comes up at the doctor or during a routine check. Yet high blood pressure is one of the most common and preventable risk factors for stroke, heart disease and other serious health conditions. It often develops without obvious symptoms, which means many people live with it for years without realising.
Understanding your blood pressure matters because managing it well can significantly reduce health risks over time. The good news is that simple steps – including regular checks, awareness and lifestyle support – can make a meaningful difference to your long-term health and independence.
Understanding blood pressure as part of everyday health
Blood pressure is not just a number checked at the doctor or at the pharmacy. It reflects how hard your heart and blood vessels are working and is influenced by many aspects of everyday life, including movement, stress, sleep and long-term habits.
For many people, managing blood pressure involves a combination of approaches. Medication may be part of the picture, but movement and physical activity also play an important role. When you see blood pressure as part of overall health – rather than an isolated issue – it becomes easier to understand how small, consistent actions can support it over time.
Taking action during Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check
Each year, Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check, led by Stroke Foundation, encourages people across the country to learn more about their blood pressure and what it means for their health. Throughout May, community events and health providers come together to make blood pressure checks more visible, accessible and part of everyday conversation.
Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check focuses on awareness and early action. It gives you a simple opportunity to check your blood pressure, better understand the numbers and start a conversation about your health.
What’s available for you in May
As part of Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check, we’re partnering with Stroke Foundation to support Australians to better understand their blood pressure and what it means for their health.
Check your blood pressure at a community event
You can have your blood pressure checked at community events in May:
-
Melbourne – Southern Cross Station
Thursday 14 May, 7–10 am -
Brisbane – Queen Street Mall
Thursday 21 May, 11 am – 2 pm
These events offer a simple opportunity to pause, check your blood pressure and start a conversation about your health.
Attend a Kieser in‑clinic education session
You can also take part in an in‑clinic education session at participating Kieser locations on:
-
Saturday 16 May, 9–10 am
These sessions help you understand what blood pressure is, why it matters and how exercise – prescribed and progressed safely – can support your health over time. We’ll talk through blood pressure and movement in a clear, practical way, with time for questions.
After the session, you’re welcome to have your blood pressure checked and look around the clinic. The aim is simple – to help you understand your blood pressure and feel more confident about what to do next.

Strength, health and what’s coming next in this series
Strength‑based exercise supports health in different ways, depending on your circumstances. If you have not had a stroke, building strength can support blood pressure management and reduce future health risks as part of a broader prevention approach.
If you have had a stroke, or you’re living with increased risk, strength‑based exercise can also support recovery, daily function and long‑term independence. With the right guidance, it can help you rebuild confidence in your body and everyday movement.
As part of our support of Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check, the next two blog posts in this series will explore these areas in more detail.
A simple place to start
You don’t need to make major changes overnight. Checking your blood pressure, learning what the numbers mean and knowing where to find trusted support can be positive first steps – whether for yourself or for someone you care about.
Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check is a chance to start that conversation, build understanding and feel supported to take small, meaningful actions towards better health.
