Machine of the Month - J1 Calf Raise Machine

The J1, or calf raise, strengthens the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles of the calves.

The calf muscles are used in nearly every activity of daily life, including walking and climbing stairs. Strengthening the calf muscles can also help to reduce the risk of Achilles tendon injuries and improve balance.

Activities that require propulsion to move the body forward, such as running or cycling, utilise the calf muscles to lift the heels. The calf muscles also play an important pumping role in venous circulation.

Important Technique Points

  • Ensure that the hip and knee joints remain fully extended throughout the exercise

  • If performing the exercise on a single leg, ensure that you remain in an upright position

  • During the exercise, stand on the balls of the feet and try not to slip onto the outer edge of the foot

  • If using the belt, make sure it is placed on the hips, not the lower back

If you would like to add the J1 to your training program, be sure to talk to an Exercise Scientist.
