B1 Leg Extension Machine

Meet the B1, also known as the leg extension machine. This is the machine we use to strengthen your quadriceps (thigh muscles).

Whether you’re looking for exercises to strengthen quads or aiming to maintain independence as you age, the leg extension exercise is an effective way to help build strength safely and efficiently.

Why leg strength is important

Strong quadriceps can help stabilise the knee and support everyday activities such as standing, walking, climbing stairs and rising from a chair. Building quad strength through targeted exercises can help reduce the strain on joints, support balance and lower the risk of falls and knee injuries. It can also help people manage conditions such as knee osteoarthritis. Having strong legs makes it easier to stay active and independent for longer.

How the B1 works

The B1 isolates the quadriceps muscles by extending your leg at the knee joint. The B1 can help improve knee function by helping to strengthen the muscles that support the kneecap.

How the B1 can help

Adding the B1 can help support you during many everyday activities, including:

  • maintaining your balance
  • bending down to pick something up
  • getting out of the bath
  • getting in and out of your car.

Technique tips

  • Be sure to only grip the handles loosely.
  • Remember to keep your back in contact with the backrest and keep your neck, shoulders and arms relaxed.
  • Keep your toes slightly pointed out.
  • As the exercise begins to become difficult, remember to keep a regular breathing pattern and avoid holding your breath.
